On the Difference of Mechanical Properties between Austempered and Quench tempered Carbon Steel (2nd Report)

S. Owaku, K. Iijima and N. Kashiwagi

Abstract:

In the first report, the authors have pointed out the dfference of mechanical properties between austempered and quench-tempered cabon steels. In this report, they describes the results of experiments made for clarifying the cause of this difference.
The results were as follows :
(i) Cooling velocity in the martensite transformation range did not affect the ductility and toughness of quenech-tempered steel.
(ii) Temper-aging (prolonged tempering) and austemper-aging (prolonged austempering) exceedingly improved the ductility and toughness of steel.
(iii) The difference of properties of the products from the two treatments is believed to have resulted from the difference of their producing mechanisms and stabilities of structures.
