Effect of Alloying Elements on the Stability of Epsilon Iron

Abstract:

A dilatometric experiment has been made on the fcc hcp martensitic transformation in Fe-Mn-X alloys, and the effects of the alloying elements on the MSγ → ε and ASε → γ temperatures have been studied. It was observed that the ASε → γ temperature was lowered by additions of Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Nb, Ni, Si, Ti, V, W and C, while the MSγ → ε temperature was lowered by alloying of the above elements except Co. The parameter Δ GXγ/ε Fe which represents the effect of alloying element X on the relative stability of γ -iron and ε -iron near 500°K has been evaluated by thermodynamic analysis of the ASε → γ and MSγ → ε data. It was found that the value of the parameter Δ GXγ/ε Fe changes systematically with the group number in the periodic classification. Another parameter Δ GXα/ε Fe for α -iron and ε -iron was obtained from the values of Δ GXα/γ Fe and   Δ GXγ/ε Fe, and the parameter was found to change in accordance with the periodic table.
