Studies on the Electrodeposited Alloys (3rd Report) On the Structure of Electrodeposited Cu-Zn, Ag-Cd, Cu-Ag and Zn-Cd Alloys

Kaoru Aotani

Abstract:

The structure of three electrodeposited alloys consisting of the complete solid solution was studied by the author in the previous paper. In this paper the structure of four electrodepesited alloys, Cu-Zn, Ag-Cd, Cu-Ag and Zn-Cd having the different structure was given. Cu-Zn and Ag-Cd alloys have the complicated structure that consists of some phases of the same type, but Cu-Ag and Zn-Cd alloys are both simple eutectic alloys. It suggests the mechanism of electrodeposition ; either these alloys have quite different structure from that of equilibrium diagram or similar one.
The structure of these electrodeposited alloys was studied by means of X-ray diffraction. As the result, the predominent phases in any alloy were the ones predicted from the thermal equilibrium diagram, but the heterogeneous nature of the deposits was noteworthy, and so both the phase that enlarged the existing range and the one reduced it were both observed. Consequently, any electrodeposited alloy has the similar phase with the equilibrium diagram, so it is not simple mixture of each metal whether it is complicated alloy or not.
