Calculations of the Residual Stress By Taking Considerations of the Transformation

Hideo Shimoda

Abstract:

There are many difficulties in the calculation of the residual stress by taking considerations of transformation. Having done calculations by Dr. Hirones ingenious method, I obtained the following remarkable results : (1) The important conditions which must known to perform the calculations of the residual stress are as follows : (a)Temperature distribution within the steel when any part of it changes to the elastic state, (b) The relation between the threshold temperature of the elastic state and the transformation temperature. and (c) The expansion caused by the transformation, (2) The results of calculation obtained by applying above conditions properly, are very nearly equal to values measured experimentally by H. Bühler and E. Scheil, and (3) These results of calculation are sufficient to explain the phenomena of quenching cracks.
